Ho Ho Hull Decor

Leopard 44 Waterbug is back on our docks having arrived yesterday. She continues to create a buzz over her hull decor, wrapped in vinyl. You can see for yourself why! This hull is so interesting and the possibilities to personalize are endless. We are often asked "where did they get that done?" Call Burl Cole at 1-800-707-1008 or check out www.skinswraps.com.

Super Value Outremer 55 Coming to the Market!

Radio Bemba ("Radio Lips" as Cuban's call word on the street)reports a 2000 Outremer 55 will be coming onto the market in a day or so. She is going to be a SUPER VALUE as she is being taken in on trade and will want a quick sale. These are the ones to jump at my friends! She is the standard version of the Outremer 55 and I found she was the first of the 55-footers to be equipped with a carbon fiber mast. Her first and previous owners recall she's a fast cat. "I can remember one night in the Med when we often surfed at 20 knots."

She can be yours for somewhere in the high $300s!! If interested please call Just Catamarans ASAP: 954-713-0414. ;)

New Catamaran Design: Outremer 51

Official announcement to the public of the new Outremer 51 will be held at the Paris Boat Show (Salon Nautique) Dec 8-16th. The Outremer 51 is an expansion of the Outremer 49, which received European Boat of the Year in 2012 and SAIL's 2012 Best Boat award for her deck and cockpit layout.

The 50'1" Outremer will surely be a yacht worth a look with those credentials! More info can be seen on www.catamaran-outremer.com and www.outremerusa.com

Rescue Completed - All Home Safely

A good friend of ours sadly lost his Leopard 46 at sea, but good news is crew is all OK and now safely back home. Sometime in the middle of the night they hit something submerged and gashed the stbd hull just fwd of the keel.

Funny, but prior to his departure here he noticed the liferaft had just expired and Johan offered to take him to West Marine and buy a new one. Little did he know it would come in very handy! The owner was not on board but is taking the situation surprisingly well. His writing is superb and his blog recounts the entire rescue. Take a peek..! Wish him well! Mourning a Loss Amongst Us

Four French sailors drowned in the sinking of their 13m catamaran, Tuesday, off the town of Saidia on the northern coast of Morocco, reportedly due to bad weather. Four bodies were found near the border city of Algeria; a fifth is still missing, leaving some hope of recovery as the lifeboat has not yet been identified.

The boat had left Marseille (south of France) early in the morning and had plans to make a long journey with stopovers to Brazil. The skipper was experienced but the reported conditions were "very bad" at the beginning of the week in the north-east of Morocco.

No official reports have identified the sailors, but linked is a Blog in anticipation of such a journey by Bernard Allemand, skipper of Belize 43 "LOVE LOVE". Also on board this catamaran are two couples, making the similarities between the reports dismally parallel. I have lost sleep over this tragedy and cannot imagine the heavy hearts felt by family and friends who knew them. My heart and sympathy goes out to them as the loss is felt through our catamaran community I am sure...

As further information presents itself we hope to learn the cause so that future tragedies can be avoided.

Light Displacement vs Max Displacement

For Catamarans, weight is an important issue which affects performance more so than on monohulls {or half boats ;)}. The lighter the cat, the faster she will perform.

For racers this means stripping as much as possible to achieve the highest speed possible. For cruisers, this means "how much can I bring on board without sacrificing safety and performance". If you're cruising, you may have a tendancy to want to bring everything on board times 20 ... "just in case". That can add up quickly!

Because it is so important for the vessel's owners to have accurate information, the European Economic Community (EEC) regulations require a European builder to state both Light displacement AND Max displacement, something that was not required years ago and is not required in some other parts of the world. Here's what that means:

According the ISO 12217 and ISO 866 norms, the light displacement refers to:

- all structural elements

- all the comfort equipment included in the standard version of the boat (as mattresses, cushions, cockpit table),

- the heaviest engines available,

- standard batteries,

- electronics,

- standard deck equipment (ladder, winches, anchors chain and anchor, mast, boom, standard sails, sheets, halyards…).

According to norm ISO 14946, the max loaded displacement refers to the light displacement with in addition:

- the maximum number of persons that the boat can accept (75 kg each),

- all the extra equipment,

- the basic personal equipment,

- provisioning,

- all tanks full (fuel, water and grey tanks),

- Liferaft.

When you compare specifications from a builder, make sure you are comparing apples to apples (or light vs light and max vs max) and that they have the same definition of those terms. =)

Dream Yacht Design wins award for Wave Catamaran

The Silver A' Design Award was given to the creative team of the Wave Catamaran, Arch. Roberta Visintin and Arch. Cristiana Foytik, in the Yacht and Marine Vessels Design Category.

The design looks very interesting! Here's what the creator, Roberta Visintin, had to say..
“Thinking about the sea as a world in a continuous movement, we took the “wave” as a symbol of it. Starting from this idea we modelled the lines of the hulls which seem to break themselves to bow. The second element at the base of the project idea is the concept of the living space that we wanted to draw in a sort of continuity between interiors and exteriors. Through the big glass windows we get an almost 360 degree view, which allows a visual continuity with outside. Not only, through the large glass doors opened life inside is projected in the outdoor spaces."
